I feel compelled to be one of the first ones to write a review before this page is flooded with fake reviews written by the staff and people hired by the movie studio like it is for most other films nowadays. This is one of the worst movies I have seen in a very long time.

I saw the first Silent Hill movie when it came out a few years ago. I don’t remember loving it but there were memorable scenes and it did creep me out a little in the way a horror movie is supposed to. Radha Mitchell and Sean Bean did a good job in the first movie and the story was good enough for someone like me who haven’t played the video game. The special effects were impressive and went along quite well with the plot and directing to create a horror theme. Overall it was good entertainment (still talking about the first Silent Hill movie).

This new one, on the other hand, is a complete waste of time and money. Where to begin… The story is terrible. There is basically no point to the movie. Random characters, both people and monsters, that contribute little to nothing to the story keep coming and going. Some characters that are supposed to be important to the story get taken out one way or another with no explanation. The plots simply don’t make sense even by horror films standards. The writer tries too hard to put unnecessary and unrelated scenes together using sub-par special effects and CGI.

Directing by Michael J. Bassett is extremely amateur. Note that he is also the writer of the movie. I’m not sure if he actually thinks he’s doing a good job or simply gave up halfway through it. Either way I would be very surprised if he’s given another chance to write or direct a big budget film after this.

The script is laughable. The whole story is basically written in bad and lengthy monologues in details recited by characters in front of funny sets. There are random characters that show up to tell a boring background story in details then get taken out with no explanation. The wording of the script sounds like it was written by some middle school kid who just finished seeing some cheesy movies from the 80s for the first time.

Casting is, well, also terrible. Besides decent performance by good actors like Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, and Malcolm McDowell as one would expect, the rest of the cast is pretty much a joke. I want to say Carrie-Anne Moss did a decent job but the bad script and make-up screw her over. The main character played by Adelaide Clemens is not impressive and poor editing didn’t help her performance. Another main character played by Kit Harington is painful to watch, and the director didn’t give him a chance with an abysmal script.

The ending (and the whole movie for the matter) is far-fetched and unoriginal. Basically nothing makes sense from start to finish.
